MUSIC: Tunes to Shake the January Blues

Every New Year’s Day, my mum takes down the Christmas decorations. She says it’s bad luck to keep them up any later but I suspect this ritual is more to do with reducing the amount of stuff that needs dusting. Usually nobody minds; squeezing past the Christmas tree, holding your breath for fear of knocking off a glass bauble, gets kind of annoying after a month. Yet this year my dad came home from his New Year’s Day shift, saw the gaping void of treeless space in the living room, and asked sadly:

‘Now that Christmas is over, what have we got to look forward to?’

Knowing my dad this statement was suffused with a more than a little melodrama (this is the man who declared an orderly queue of five cars in the Heathrow drop-off lane to be ‘CHAOS!’). But he also seemed genuinely sorry that the festive season was over. Who can blame him? With no more parties or feasts or bank holidays, we are now condemned to return to our normal lives and get on with the business of 2017. Furthermore, Donald Trump officially becomes President this month. SAD aside, January is set to be rather bleak.

How can we turn those politically-weary, sun-deprived frowns upside down? Initially I considered declaring the start of 2017 a right-off and skipping straight into March. Then I remembered that A) despite Stephen Hawkin’s best laid plans time travel isn’t a thing yet, and B) March is Theresa May’s month of choice for triggering Article 50. Both compelling reasons to stay in January a little longer.

Back to the drawing board I went…and emerged with an idea so simple, so achievable, that I almost wrote it off as too easy. But what lifts a heavy heart quicker than a happy song? On many a night out I’ve begun the getting-ready process feeling lethargic, unmotivated, thinking about my essay deadlines – and by the end have found myself running late to pres because I was too busy boogying to Beyoncé. Music is food for the soul. If ever there was cause for a feel-good playlist, January 2017 is it.

So here’s my list of cracking bangers to set 2017 off on the right foot. Got any songs that make you feel on top of the world? Leave a comment below with your blues-busting tunes!
